TestTracker: Alternative to Lockdown Browser With No Installations
Verify candidate identity, track whether they access other tabs/software, and record/prevent use of shortcuts. Maintain test security without installing any plugins or new software.
What is TestTracker? A “lockdown lite.”
A lockdown browser is a key weapon in the test security arsenal. It is designed to prevent examinees from cheating – accessing other software, taking screenshots, etc. – by fully locking down the computer. But in many cases, the examinee does not have admin rights to install software on the computer, for example if it is owned by a university or government entity.
TestTracker is a more flexible approach that allows you to deliver the test in a standard browser. Instead of outright preventing such actions, it allows the candidate to do so (or at least attempt it!) but tracks the events, like you see on the left. Some events remain fully blocked, when allowed by the standard browser. This greatly enhances the integrity of the test but without the intrusiveness of installed software or the cost of proctoring.
TestTracker can be combined with other levels of test security in our platform, such as the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) test entry requirement.
How does TestTracker improve test security?
Here are some of the specific ways that you can enhance security and protect the integrity of your exams.
Verify Identity
Require the candidate to take a picture of their face and ID card before they enter the test. These are stored as a record with the event tracking report.
Disable Shortcuts
TestTracker will disable and track common shortcuts like copy/paste or screenshot. It can also disable the right-click menu to access such actions, so for example if the user selects text and tries to right-click then nothing will happen.
Other tabs/software
We track if someone opens other tabs in the browser or if focus is lost from the browser entirely, such as using other software on the computer. We can also blur the exam in such cases – so for example they can’t keep looking at the item while using AI to look up answers.
Watermark
Worried about the examinees taking pictures of the items and sharing online? This puts their ID code into the image, so if you find it, you know exactly who took the picture. Can also deter AI from “reading” the item effectively.
Benefits of TestTracker
Configurable: You specify which tests use it, and which aspects to require.
Non-Invasive: No installation required, unlike many lockdown browsers and remote proctoring vendors.
Protects Test Content: Secure you most important asset!
Layerable: Add more security, such as NDAs and LOFT.
No-hassle: Candidates hop right into the test.
Alternative approaches to test security
TestTracker is but one option. Lockdown browser and remote proctoring are a great fit for higher-stakes exams. We also recommend you evaluate psychometric levels of security like linear on the fly testing or forensic analysis.
Lockdown browser
If you have access to install software, a lockdown browser is an excellent approach. We make this available at no extra cost, and it can be configured separately for each session or test.
